Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, was introduced with a 7.6-inch internal display, along with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which Apple says can charge up to 50 percent in about 15 minutes.
The launch combines Apple’s debut foldable phone with the new Pro line, which adds a variable-aperture camera and A20 Pro chip, as well as faster charging and improved performance.
Apple is giving the two product lines separate release windows. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will be available for pre-order on September 12 and will go on sale on September 18, while the iPhone Duo will open for pre-orders on October 16 and will go on sale on October 23.
The iPhone 18 Pro can charge to 50 percent in about 15 minutes, and the iPhone Duo in about 20 minutes.
iPhone Duo features Apple’s largest iPhone display yet
iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch external Super Retina XDR display when closed and a 7.6-inch internal screen when open.
Apple says the large panel is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s display, and the outer screen takes up 90 percent of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen real estate.
Both screens have the same aspect ratio and support ProMotion, Always On, and a maximum outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits.
The nano-texture coating is designed to reduce glare, and the FaceTime camera remains hidden under the internal display when not in use.
The hinge consists of more than 100 components, supported by internal ribs and a grade 5 titanium body.
Apple also lists Ceramic Shield protection, an IP68 rating, and Touch ID on the side button. Apple says the iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year.
John Ternus, Apple’s chief executive, called the iPhone Duo “the most revolutionary change to the iPhone since the original.” He said it combines Apple’s largest iPhone display with the A20 Pro’s performance for content, multitasking and gaming.
iPhone Duo combines A20 Pro with two batteries
Inside, iPhone Duo uses the A20 Pro with a custom vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture. Apple says there is one battery on each side, and software allows the cells to work as a single system.
Apple rates the iPhone Duo at up to 31 hours of video playback on the internal display, up to 44 hours on the external display, and up to 24 hours when using both screens equally. MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging can reach 50 percent in about 30 minutes.
Camera controls also provide quick access to the camera, and Siri Camera mode allows Siri to respond to what the user sees.
iPhone 18 Pro adds variable aperture camera and power to A20 Pro
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max introduce several photography upgrades. Their new 48-megapixel Fusion rear camera introduces the iPhone to an adjustable aperture with six laser-cut blades that move between aperture settings.
Users can manually select from four aperture options in the Camera app, as well as shutter speed and white balance controls.
Apple says the system is designed to improve low-light images, group photos, and control depth of field.
Video upgrades include cinematic effects that can be applied post-capture to footage recorded at up to 60fps, while time-lapse can record in 4K and Dolby Vision HDR formats.
According to Apple, the A20 Pro is built using a 2nm process and delivers 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro. Its seven-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro’s GPU, and its dual 16-core Neural Engine provides 32 cores for AI processing and computational photography.
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said the company is focusing on camera, performance, battery and intelligence in the new Pro line.
The Pro models will be offered in black, silver, glacier and burgundy, while the iPhone Duo will come in starry white and night sky. Apple’s phased launch will see the Pro phones go on sale first, followed by the foldable Duo on October 23.
