DMK President and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin on Friday (September 11, 2026) expressed shock that 1,857 super specialty medical seats in India remain vacant and called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s immediate intervention in the matter.
Mr. Stalin, quoting a report published in Hindusays a report on X: “It is shocking that nearly 1,857 valuable seats in super specialty healthcare institutions remain vacant across the country simply because the Union Government’s Director General of Health Services (DGHS) has not cut the qualifying percentile. This includes 40 seats meant exclusively for working doctors in Tamil Nadu.”
“Yesterday, in the Tamil Nadu State Medical Officers’ Association case, the Supreme Court ordered reduction of the percentile,” Mr. Stalin noted, urging the Prime Minister to immediately intervene in the matter and reduce it to zero percentile, as was done in previous years.
“The Union government should also allow states to independently reduce the percentile for their placement quota when seats remain vacant. Public health is a constitutional responsibility of the states. No medical seat, a valuable national asset, should go to waste when our people need more medical specialists,” he added.
