Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran resigned from his post on Wednesday ahead of the company’s annual general meeting scheduled for August 18, sources said.

N Chandrasekaran resigned as chairman of Tata Sons on Wednesday, having led the group since 2017 and expanded its presence in sectors such as aviation and digital technology, reportedly due to differences with Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata.
Natarajan, popularly known as N Chandrasekaran or “Chandra”, took over as chairman of Tata Sons in 2017, becoming the first non-Parsi to head the more than 150-year-old Tata Group. Prior to this role, he served as CEO and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), where he played a key role in transforming the company into one of the world’s leading IT services companies.
It is noteworthy that under his leadership, the company expanded into several sectors such as aviation, electronics, digital technology and semiconductors, and also oversaw major acquisitions and business restructuring.
While Chandrasekaran’s current term as chairman runs until February 2027, his continuation as chairman is subject to reappointment. Sources indicate that he is unlikely to run for another term. If confirmed, his departure will pave the way for a surprise leadership change at one of India’s largest business conglomerates.
His resignation comes amid reports of differences with Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and growing tensions with some shareholders, sources said. Neither Tata Sons nor Chandrasekharan have officially commented on this development.
