There is encouraging news for passengers traveling between Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. The construction of the six-lane Greenfield Expressway connecting Ambala to Shamli is progressing at a rapid pace with almost 70% of the project already completed.
The upcoming expressway is expected to significantly change road connectivity across North India. Once launched, the project is likely to reduce travel time between Ambala and Shamli from around three hours to just 90 minutes.
₹The Rs 4,900 crore project covers 121.78 km.
The estimated cost of the entire project is approx. ₹4900 crores. The 121.78 km high-speed corridor is being built by three companies.
About 75 km of expressway will pass through it. Haryanaand approximately 45 km will be in Uttar Pradesh. Construction began in 2023, and the project was originally expected to be completed and open to traffic by March 2025.
Four districts of Haryana will be connected
Currently, there is no direct four-lane highway or expressway connecting Ambala and Shamli. Passengers usually have to take the longer route via Karnal, where congestion and heavy traffic can cause the travel time to exceed three hours.
The new corridor will start from the Ambala-Chandigarh road and will extend to Thana Bhawan in Shamli.
In Haryana, the expressway will pass through four major districts:
- Ambala
- Kurukshetra
- Karnal
- Yamunanagar
The route will then pass through Uttar Pradesh and provide direct connectivity to Saharanpur and Shamli.
Expressway connecting three major routes
One of the key benefits of the project will be its integration with several important highways and expressways.
At Gogwan Jalalpur in Shamli, the corridor will connect with the Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Economic Corridor. At Sadalpur, it will connect with the Ambala-Chandigarh and Ambala-Mohali routes.
The corridor will also facilitate direct traffic movement on the Ludhiana-Amritsar route via Ambala.
This extensive connectivity is expected to benefit not only commuters in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, but also travelers and commercial vehicles moving between Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan.
Modern amenities planned for passengers
The Ambala-Shamli Expressway is also being developed with modern roadside facilities similar to those available on new expressway corridors such as the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway.
The planned facilities include petrol pumps, gas stations, restrooms, food courts, restaurants, vehicle charging points and parking spaces.
These facilities are expected to make long-distance travel more convenient and provide essential services to passengers along the route.
Great incentive for business and farmers
The expressway is expected to bring economic benefits and reduce travel times. It will provide faster and more direct connectivity between the manufacturing sector of Ambala, the famous plywood industry of Yamunanagar and the sugar mills of Shamli and Muzaffarnagar.
For commercial operators, the new route could reduce the need for trucks to travel on congested and longer routes. Shorter travel distances and reduced delays can help reduce fuel consumption and logistics costs.
The project is thus expected to strengthen regional connectivity while supporting trade, agriculture, manufacturing and movement of goods between Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and neighboring regions.
