OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Healthy pets have some padding, but too much of it can pose a health hazard.
Rubbing your hands over the dog or cat’s torso should expose skin that moves back and forth easily and feel the ribs.
The pet should have a clearly defined waist in the lower part of the chest and a slight bulge on the stomach.
Crash diets are not recommended
Crash diets are not recommended for overweight pets as they can kill cats by shutting down their liver.
Pets don’t gain weight overnight, so losing weight requires gradually changing their eating habits and adding exercise over time.
Start with a veterinarian
For overweight pets, the first step is to visit a veterinarian, who can check for medical causes of excess weight and recommend a diet and exercise plan that won’t be too taxing for your pet.
Cut up table scraps and use small treats.
Table scraps should be avoided because food adds weight. Small treats can be used for training and rewards, as pets only need the taste.
Attention, such as ear scratching or playing tug of war, can also serve as a reward and encourage pets to move.
Exercise Suggestions
Walking, playing tug of war, or playing catch at least three times a week can help keep your pet active and reduce excess weight.
Veterinarians recommend starting slowly. Excess weight in pets can lead to diabetes, hip and knee problems, and liver and heart disease.
Upcoming Event
The Nebraska Humane Society’s annual Walking and Dog Festival is scheduled for Sept. 27.
The event takes place in the meadow, is dog friendly and is free to attend. People who do not have pets are invited. More information can be found on the Nebraska Humane Society website.
