Where were you when Oasis announced they were reuniting after 16 years apart?
It might have seemed like a trivial and perhaps trivial matter, but in a world dominated by war, politics and strife, confirmation that Liam and Noel had buried the hatchet seemed to provide some short-term relief from the turmoil and uncertainty.
Just as the release of their debut album Definitely Maybe over 30 years ago captured a moment in time, reigniting feelings of optimism and possibility, their comeback is about something similar.
For many of the fans gathered in Heaton Park tonight, they were either too young or not even born when Oasis burst onto the British music scene.
But as they stand shoulder to shoulder with older millennials and Gen Xers, their sentiments and feelings are the same—it’s a very important moment in time.
“This is not a drill” is the message emblazoned on the huge screens ahead of a montage of Oasis reunion rumors, newspaper headlines and finally the confirmation that lit up the park last August.
“The guns fell silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over.”
“It’s really happening,” squeals a man in the crowd, before pints of something that isn’t Carling are thrown over the barriers – and a flash further behind – signals that all is well and truly in full swing.
The adoring crowd let out an almighty lion’s roar as Manchester’s favorite sons appeared on stage – again with their hands raised, and this time their hands actually joined. Perhaps being in their native land makes them feel brotherly love more strongly.
