The United States recognized the presence of weapons in orbit: what are they, who are they targeting?

New Delhi: In a rare public update on its military capabilities beyond Earth, the United States has admitted it has space control weapons capable of operating in orbit. The US Space Force said the weapon is designed to protect US forces from hostile activities in space and can be used for both offensive and defensive missions.

Its spokesman said on Monday (September 14): “The United States has space control weapons in orbit that can protect joint forces from enemy activity.”

The statement did not specify which weapons were deployed in orbit. The admission comes at a time when the United States views China and Russia as its two biggest rivals in space. Both countries are developing military capabilities that can be used against satellites and other space systems during a conflict.

The US Space Force has described space control as the set of missions needed to challenge and control activities in the space domain. The spokesman said: “Space control includes the missions required to combat and control the space domain. This includes the use of kinetic and non-kinetic methods to influence enemy capabilities.”

It also states that these capabilities can be used for both offense and defense. The statement did not provide details about the weapon, its location in orbit or how it could be used against another country’s space assets.

Reference to kinetic and non-kinetic methods refers to various methods of interfering with or disabling enemy space systems. Satellites support military communications, surveillance and navigation. They are an important asset during war.

The United States views China and Russia as its biggest competitors in space. The US Space Force says Beijing is developing and operating space and counter-space capabilities as part of its military modernization strategy.

Russia, according to Washington, views space as a potential battlefield and considers control of space an important factor in future conflicts.
