NEW DELHI: Prolific Indian opener Abhishek Sharma was hospitalized with a stomach upset ahead of the group match against Namibia in the T20 Cricket World Cup, a cricket board official said on Wednesday.
The explosive left-hander is key to India’s chances of defending their title in the 20-team tournament and is doubtful for Thursday’s Group A match in New Delhi.
The 25-year-old was admitted to a Delhi hospital on Tuesday after missing training due to a stomach problem he suffered during the first match in Mumbai, an official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
India assistant coach Ryan ten Doschate acknowledged the concerns on Tuesday, saying the batsman “still has a few stomach issues.”
“We hope he will be ready to play in a few days.”
Abhishek was underwhelmed by India’s win over the United States but performed well in the run-up to the tournament.
India will take on arch-rivals Pakistan in a blockbuster on Sunday.
