TV actor Rohit Chandel, who was shooting for Star Plus show Sairaab, has been granted bail by the Mumbai Sessions Court in a POCSO case filed against him by a 16-year-old girl who accused him of stalking, stalking and assault.
Rohit Chandel gets bail in POCSO case – here’s what court rules
Special Judge Shashikala S Nagur granted bail to Chandel after his lawyer Advocate Savin Bedi Sachar said a chargesheet has been filed and investigation against the accused has been completed, India Today reported.
These reports contained the court’s directions stating that Rohit Chandel would be released on bail of Rs 50,000 and surety of the same amount. The court prohibited him from interfering with or threatening the victim and prosecution witnesses in the case. He was also ordered not to contact the victim or her family in any form, including through phone calls or social media. In addition, the court ruled that he must not directly or indirectly induce, threaten or make promises to persons familiar with the facts of the case in an attempt to prevent them from disclosing information to the court.
Chandel’s troubles with the law began when he was arrested by the Mumbai police after a minor filed a complaint against him. The complainant alleged that the actor repeatedly contacted her on several phone numbers despite her objections, stalked her and subjected her to verbal and physical abuse near her home. In response to the complaint, the police registered an FIR citing sections of the POCSO Act as well as relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita regarding harassment and causing harm.
Rohit was subsequently arrested at his home and remanded in judicial custody pending further investigation. The case was heard before the POCSO Special Court in Mumbai, which oversaw the completion of the investigation and the filing of a charge sheet outlining the charges and statements of witnesses. Given the seriousness of the charges against the minor, the case attracted significant media attention and was directly related to the actor’s ongoing television work.
At the time of his arrest, Rohit Chandel was part of the cast of Star Plus show Sairaab. After his arrest, the makers replaced him with actor Krishna Kaul, who has since taken on the role. Whether the actor will return to the series remains unclear at this stage.
