The British soldier killed in a car crash in Ukraine has been named Major Paul Wilkes. The 40-year-old father of two, who served in the intelligence service, died on the front line on September 12, the Ministry of Defense said.
Major Wilkes was born on November 13, 1985. He was appointed to Sandhurst on 14 April 2012 and joined the Survey Corps, where he remained throughout his career, successfully rising to the rank of Major. During his military career, Major Wilkes completed several operational tours and was awarded two Operational Service Medals in recognition of his service. He was also recently awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on May 7, 2026.
The father of two is described as a gifted leader who commands the admiration and respect of those who have had the privilege of serving alongside him.
Colleagues described him as a formidable officer, a valued colleague and a loyal friend to all who knew him.
His commander said: “It is with deep sadness that we honor the memory of Major Paul Wilkes.
“Even under pressure, Paul maintained a keen sense of humor and a genuine warmth that connected him with everyone in the unit. He was a man of great intellect, but remained a comrade to those with whom he served.
“He often spoke of his love for his wife and two sons, expressing his deep gratitude for their support, which enabled him to serve with such distinction. It was from this foundation that he was able to meet the challenges of his role, and it was in the course of his devotion to duty that he made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Major Wilkes represented the finest traditions of British defense. It was a great honor to serve with him. We will miss him.”
His former commander said they were devastated by the loss of Major Paul Wilkes, describing him as a man who brought intelligence, professionalism and quiet determination to everything he did. He said Paul still has a lot to give to the unit, those under his command and the profession he holds dear.
He added that Paul was one of the finest leaders and intelligence officers he had the pleasure of working with, calling him a rising star in the intelligence community whose intelligence, compassion and professionalism were matched by his humility and concern for others. He said Paul was “the best of us.”
Meanwhile, Chief of Military Intelligence and Colonel Commandant of the Intelligence Corps, Lieutenant General Matthew Jones, said that the entire Intelligence Corps was heartbroken.
Corps Lt. Gen. Jones added, “Paul strived for operational excellence in everything he did. With a selfless and compassionate approach, his main concern was always his team. He was extremely motivated to develop those around him. Paul had a razor-sharp intellect and a steely determination to succeed.
“Paul was always calm under pressure, good-natured even under the most difficult conditions, insightful and decisive. He leaves behind a legacy that will live on in the Survey Corps and beyond. The extremely positive example he set will continue to inspire us in the years to come.”
Defense Minister the Rt Hon Wes Streeting MP said Major Wilkes served his country with pride and dedication, adding that his loss will be deeply felt by those around him.
He said the tributes from those who worked with Paul reflected his exceptional talent and ability, highlighted by genuine warmth, compassion and a desire to support others.
Mr Streeting said the loss of Major Wilkes was a poignant reminder of the enormous sacrifices made by armed forces and their families in service to country. He added that his thoughts remain with Major Wilkes’ family, loved ones and colleagues.
