Another project that will benefit is Tlysau Mynydd Eryri (Mountain Jewels of Eryri), part of a conservation partnership led by Plantlife Cymru that aims to protect the future of some of the rarest alpine plants in Wales.
Ecological studies and regular monitoring will map the impact of restoration work using species such as woodcock and otter, as well as plants including aspen and juniper, to provide insight into the health of the valley.
The work will also build on the innovative use of GPS collars for more precise grazing management.
Cwm Idwal partnership manager Rhys Weldon-Roberts said the monitoring was “really important because it allows us to graze in the right places, at the right density, at the right time.”
He added: “Cattle collars allow us to move cattle across the landscape and you can monitor them as they go, and farmers can see that data in their apps.”
“This can make grazing much more efficient for livestock and nature.”
In addition to local farmers, the work will emphasize community involvement and volunteering.
“There are opportunities for people to get involved in monitoring, volunteering, just learning about the landscape as a whole,” Weldon-Roberts said.
“Here in Qom Idwal we have a lot of schools visiting us every year and they will be able to see the results of the project and the effect that the livestock are having in maintaining grazing, so it is very exciting in that respect too.
“By bringing people with them, they have the opportunity to learn and hopefully appreciate them and ultimately try to protect this special landscape that surrounds us.”
The project is funded by almost £1 million from the Nature Networks Fund., externalprovided by the Heritage Trust on behalf of the Welsh Government and in partnership with Natural Resources Wales.
“What we’re trying to do with this project is lay the foundation for the future,” Rogers said.
“Some things will change over the next three years, but we are positioning ourselves so that the recovery can continue for decades after that.”
