Environment and climate change Canada has implemented a new alert system for extreme weather conditions that meteorologists say could help reduce “alert fatigue.”
Starting Tuesday, Environment Canada is using a system that allows forecasters to draw a polygon over the area covered by a severe weather warning.
This new system allows for a much more targeted approach, Giselle Doukie, an emergency preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, told Global News.
“This will significantly reduce areas that would otherwise be warned if we had area forecasting, which is ideal because it reduces the number of warning notices if you don’t expect to be affected by the warning,” she said.
The more precise warnings come after the national weather agency launched a new alert system last fall that added color codes – yellow, orange or red – to indicate the severity of a weather event.
Yellow warnings are the most common. They are issued when hazardous weather conditions could cause damage, operational disruptions or personal injury. Impacts are likely to be moderate, localized and/or short-term.
Orange warnings are issued when severe weather conditions have the potential to cause significant damage, disruption or injury. Impacts may be severe, widespread and/or last for several days.
Red warnings are rare. They are issued when very dangerous and possibly life-threatening weather conditions will cause serious damage and destruction. Impacts have the potential to be large, widespread and long-lasting.

This system, introduced in November 2025, still left the entire region under a blanket of color-coded warnings.

Dookie said the update released this week will issue more targeted severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings — only for affected areas.
” [Meteorological Service of Canada] Forecasters will be monitoring hurricanes in real time, and they can now merge systems, separate them, monitor them more closely, and also upgrade some of the hurricanes,” she said.
Dookie said the biggest impact will be a reduction in what has become known as “alert fatigue,” caused by blanket warnings that cover areas outside the path of severe weather.
“We really want Canadians to take warnings very seriously and when they see a threat that could impact them, there is someone behind the scenes who is closely monitoring these storms and they want you to do what is necessary to protect yourself, others and your property from harm,” she said.
The changes affect only severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings—other alerts, such as heat warnings and lightning warnings, will continue to have wide warning areas.
Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell said he’s been waiting for Environment Canada to implement the forecast system, which has been in place in the U.S. for 16 years.
“It has led to big improvements south of the border,” he said.
“If this is implemented properly, we will soon see big results as soon as the next severe weather outbreak occurs.”
He said the new system will not only improve accuracy but also improve efficiency.
“The sooner you can get those warnings out to the people who are going to be affected, the better chance you have of saving property and then potentially saving lives,” he said.
“I think overall it will help all of us in the field of meteorology.”
Environment Canada said the colour-coded warning system will remain in place along with the new polygonal system during a transition period to allow third-party weather platforms to adapt.
The wider regional weather observing system will still be in place.
