Highlights of the conflict in West Asia: Yemen’s Houthis reach a strategic island at the mouth of Bab al-Mandeb

Top diplomats from Iran and Saudi Arabia spoke by phone to discuss “growing instability” in the region, Tehran said, without mentioning recent fighting in Yemen, where both countries support rival sides. Tehran militarily and financially supports Yemen’s Houthis, who have held large parts of the country’s north for years.

Riyadh has long supported Yemen’s internationally recognized government and has carried out airstrikes against the Houthis since they began their offensive, the group said.

Iran’s top diplomat Abbas Araghchi spoke with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan about “escalating tensions and growing instability in the region,” according to Tehran’s Foreign Ministry.

A summary of the conversation said both sides “emphasized the need for continued cooperation and diplomatic efforts to prevent tensions from spreading and restore stability.”
