Clifford believes the theft of domestic heating oil highlights the wider inequalities facing rural people in Northern Ireland.
“While urban households often have access to gas networks and a choice of energy suppliers, many rural households are reliant on a single source of fuel stored outside their homes,” she said.
“This creates a unique vulnerability to crime that disproportionately affects rural residents, especially older adults, low-income households and farms.”
“Rural communities are often strongest when neighbors look out for each other, so if you notice suspicious activity, unfamiliar vehicles frequenting the area, or anyone acting unusually around fuel tanks, please report it to the PSNI.”
A PSNI spokesman said fuel tanks could often be seen as “easy targets” for thieves.
“By taking precautions, you can protect your oil: lock and camouflage the tank, install a ‘level indicator’ with an audible alarm, and consider installing security lighting and CCTV.”
