Firstly, the ABI suggests checking to see if you are already insured. Some student accommodation may already include insurance, or you may be covered by your parents’ policy.
If not, there is an option to purchase contents insurance.
“This type of policy covers the cost of replacing or repairing your property if it is damaged, destroyed or stolen, giving you peace of mind that you are protected if something goes wrong,” the ABI said.
You should check how much you are insured for and whether it is enough to replace everything, including the maximum claim amount per item.
You can do this by taking inventory of all your contents, including clothing, electronics, and furniture, and adding up the replacement cost of each item.
You may have to pay extra for a nice bike or for items you take with you instead of leaving in your accommodation.
And if you’re driving, make sure your insurer knows the car is being stored in a new location.
If it is your parents’ car and you are now the main driver, you will need to tell your insurer. If you don’t, it’s illegal.
