The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) has issued a clarification on what it says is a misinterpretation of a recent order passed by the Bombay High Court in connection with the dispute between Saffron Magicworks Private Limited (owned by Nikhil Dwivedi) and Andolan Films Private Limited (owned by Vikramaditya Motwane). IMPPA was also involved in the proceedings.


IMPPA clarifies ‘wrong’ interpretation of Bombay High Court ruling
It is the association’s view that some reports and news reports currently in circulation reflect an inaccurate understanding of the scope and impact of the High Court ruling. IMPPA stated that its involvement in this matter was limited to the discharge of its institutional responsibilities in accordance with its Memorandum and Bylaws.
The association clarified that the dispute between Saffron Magicworks Private Limited and Andolan Films Private Limited has been referred to the IMPPA Dispute Resolution Committee. He explained that any determination or direction by the committee is related to the parties involved in the dispute and the specific issues that have been brought before it.
IMPPA further emphasized that it has no independent commercial claims or interests in the underlying dispute between the two companies. The association also urged that the High Court order be understood strictly on the basis of its express terms.
Responding to reports suggesting restrictions on its functioning, IMPPA clarified: “No general injunction has been made against IMPPA restricting the performance of its institutional functions.” The association said some reports currently being circulated do not accurately reflect the scope of the order or its impact on IMPPA.
IMPPA also stated that it does not accept any characterization of the judgment that goes beyond what has been expressly stated by the High Court. The association said it will continue to carry out its duties in accordance with applicable law, its regulatory framework and the directions of the court.
The clarification comes amid reports and reports regarding the legal dispute between Saffron Magicworks and Andolan Films. In its application, IMPPA sought to separate its institutional role from the commercial dispute between the two parties and clarify the scope of the court’s direction to the association.
