In Tamil Nadu, over 1.90 lakh electric vehicles (transport and non-vehicle) were registered in 2025-26, up from 1.37 lakh in 2024-25, according to the Policy Note on the Motor Vehicles Act – Administration presented in the Assembly on Tuesday by TN Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban. This is a significant increase of 38 percent from the 1,37,697 EVs registered in 2024-25.
92 percent of e-vehicles (defined as battery-powered vehicles) registered in 2025-26 are classified as non-vehicles. According to the data, a total of 5,52,214 e-vehicles have been registered in the state in recent years.
“An amount of ₹1,011 crore has been exempted from tax on registration of e-vehicles in 2025-26,” the minister said.

Tamil Nadu ranks fourth in the number of e-vehicles registered at the all-India level. The government has provided a 100 percent vehicle tax exemption for both transport and non-vehicle battery powered vehicles (BoVs), which applies until December 31, 2027.
Moreover, the Transport Department’s Policy Note 2026-27, also presented on Tuesday, shows that revenue of ₹12,503 crore was collected in 2025-26, which is 12.7% more than in 2024-25.
These include fees and taxes levied on various services rendered, compound charges, fines imposed for violations under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, as well as surcharges, environmental taxes, road safety taxes and service charges levied on each transaction.
“A total of 13.76 lakh learner’s licenses and 9.01 lakh new driving licenses were issued in 2025-26. The cumulative number of driving licenses issued in TN is 2.79 crore as on April 1, 2026,” the minister said while talking about the total stock of TN driving licenses.
