India has extended two separate invitations to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman – for a bilateral visit and to attend the BRICS summit as BIMSTEC Chairman, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday. The statement was made by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Tuesday during a fortnightly press conference here in the national capital.

Replying to ANI’s question whether the invitation had been extended to Rahman, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India first invited the Bangladesh Prime Minister on a bilateral visit and then invited him to attend the BRICS summit as the BIMSTEC Chairman.

“We invited the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for a bilateral visit. Subsequently, he was also invited to participate in the BRICS summit as the Chairman of BIMSTEC. Thus, he received two invitations – one for a bilateral visit and the other for participation in the BRICS summit,” Jaiswal said.

His remarks come as India and Bangladesh continue to move forward through constructive dialogue, mutual respect and shared commitments to long-term stability and economic partnership in South Asia. Earlier on Tuesday, Bangladesh Minister of State for External Affairs Humayun Kobir, speaking to ANI, spoke about Prime Minister Tariq Rahman’s proposed visit to India, saying, “The visit will take place when the time is right and when discussions lead to a mutually acceptable time frame. Once both parties agree on a suitable schedule, the visit will take place.”

Discussing the broader structure of the bilateral engagement, he added: “This is a working relationship and a work in progress. “Both sides are hopefully looking at this positively and working to reset the relationship.” Building on these regional dynamics, Kobir noted that Dhaka is looking forward to multilateral engagement, emphasizing that Bangladesh currently holds the rotating chairmanship of BIMSTEC and intends to host a summit at some point in 2027, saying, “Bangladesh currently holds the chairmanship and we intend to host a BIMSTEC summit at some point in 2027.”

Bilateral ties between New Delhi and Dhaka have been the subject of various diplomatic assessments since the August 2024 political transitions. Throughout these ongoing developments, a steadfast India continues to prioritize regional stability, economic cooperation and strong people-to-people ties in South Asia.
