The IPL player auction for the 2027 season will be held in India and league chairman Arun Dhumal said he was keen to bring the event home after hosting it abroad for the last three years.

“Every year we try to do it in India, but we fail to get a place given the difficult marriage season. So we definitely want him here this year given that it will be a smaller auction and hopefully we will get a seat,” said Mr Dhumal, who is due to be re-elected as IPL chairman during the BCCI AGM on September 18. The host city for the auction will be determined based on the availability of the BCCI’s preferred venue.
At the recent Governing Council meeting, the controversial Impact Player concept was also discussed after the BCCI asked teams to provide fresh feedback on the rule, which is set to remain in place until 2027.
Among the players who have expressed their doubts over the Impact Player rule are India ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, former captain Rohit Sharma, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel. Most of them argue that this dilutes the role of the generalist.
Ahead of IPL 2026, most captains have conveyed their comments to the BCCI, prompting renewed calls for the rule to be scrapped. The BCCI is open to reconsidering the Impact Player concept, Dhumal said.
“The issue is under discussion. We will take into account the feedback from all stakeholders and then take a decision on this,” Mr. Dhumal added.
The strategic rule allows teams to make substitutions at any stage of the game.
Apart from Mr Dhumal, Khairul Majumdar will also be re-elected to the IPL Governing Council on the sidelines of the annual general meeting this week.
