Laney and I have a lot in common, both in people and in our pop culture interests. But perhaps what makes us both better is what belongs to only one of us, like musical theater or K-pop creativity. We learn from each other through osmosis, and she explained to me something that is completely outside my day-to-day remit, the concept of “bias,” which I love, both for the way it twists the word and because, frankly, it is very real.
I’m not sure if it’s acceptable to use the word “bias” outside of its intended scope, but if I were going to use it, I know Laney and I would both agree that Julia Roberts is probably my ultimate bias. I like the way she moves through the world, I like it cause she’s famous almost forty years she’s completely unflappable, and while I appreciate her first and foremost as an actress, I see her as a confident star in almost any situation.
Take advantage of this brief moment from the Moncler event to open a new store in New York last night:
A million-watt smile is a given. Obviously. As is the firm but gentle squeeze of someone’s hand as she is escorted for a step and a repeat. Where she dazzles in her man’s shirt, bow tie and sparkly… puffer coat?

Some might say that a luxury outerwear brand might want to schedule its events at a time when VIP guests can easily wear their clothes. Or, if not the time (it is Fashion Week, after all), then perhaps the place. Cold storage perhaps? I can even imagine the anxiety as the advertising team watched temperatures in New York City peak at 31 C/87 F yesterday!
But they shouldn’t have worried. Because Julia is about to drape her parka over her shoulder like a shawl, as if this is how she always spends a pleasant September evening, to the point where we barely raise an eyebrow.
My bias remains unshaken and intact, and if it is now yours, then please.
