The Karnataka Transport Department registered 1,508 cases and collected over Rs 19.44 lakh in taxes and fines during a five-day special enforcement drive in Bengaluru urban and rural divisions to curb violations by private passenger vehicle operators during the Gauri Ganesh festival.
The activities were held from September 11 to 15 on the instructions of the Commissioner of Transport and Road Safety. The teams are tasked with checking complaints about fare gouging, overloading, permit violations and illegal transportation of passengers and cargo.
In Bengaluru Urban, officials checked 2,260 vehicles and recorded 811 violations. Five vehicles were impounded and 117 permit violations were identified. The unit collected ₹6.46 lakh in taxes and ₹3.97 lakh in fines, totaling ₹10.44 lakh.
In Bengaluru Rural, 1,400 vehicles were tested and 697 cases were reported. Officials identified 125 permit violations and collected Rs 6.39 lakh in taxes and Rs 2.60 lakh in fines, amounting to Rs 9 lakh.
The department has specifically directed enforcement teams to act against vehicles charging fares beyond permitted rates, carrying passengers beyond permitted capacity and carrying goods or explosives in violation of regulations.
