A renowned former detective who led the investigation to capture Levi Bellfield, the killer of Millie Dowler, Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange, Sutton easily won election to become Norfolk Commissioner two months ago.
He regularly appears in television documentaries and previously made an extended tour of the National Theater talking about his career.
Promoters announced last week that his next series of shows would take place next year, with Sutton initially saying it would have “no impact” on his day-to-day work.
But on Tuesday he admitted to the BBC he was considering canceling the tour, and on Wednesday he told advisers he had now called it off.
“What surprised me and made me think and think again was the reaction I received personally from a number of residents,” he told North Norfolk District Council’s scrutiny committee.
“I’m not sure I could do 127 dates because it was ridiculous, but I could do a few. What I don’t want is to give anyone the impression that I don’t take this role seriously and that I’m not going to do a good job at it.
“And that’s why my decision was, OK, I’m not legally required to do this, I’m not going to do this.”
