Canada’s Privacy Commissioner is asking the Federal Court to order Google to delist certain search results after Google refused to comply with the watchdog’s recommendations.
A year ago, the Privacy Commissioner’s Office said Google would not follow through on its recommendation to exclude certain articles from search results based on a person’s name.
The case, which has been ongoing since 2017, involves expunged criminal charges that the person said caused direct harm.

The watchdog recommended that Google exclude articles from search results for the person’s name, although they will still be available online and appear in results for other searches.
The Privacy Commissioner has applied to the Federal Court to ensure compliance with its recommendations.
Google says the case raises issues related to freedom of expression that have not been addressed by the courts, and a company spokesman says the company welcomes the opportunity to address those issues in court.
