Gerry Sanders-Carr, owner of Exe Valley Lamb farm near Exeter, said he had lost 15% of his sheep to the virus.
“Talking to some of the guys who were picking up large quantities of dead animals every morning, I’m sure there will be long-term effects on some of these guys,” he said.
Mark Walter, who farms Milton Damerel in north Devon, fears 40% of his lambs could be stillborn or disabled by bluetongue.
He added: “All we did was stab sheep day and night. Poor sheep, it was terrible for them.”
