Circular funding! Rogue AI agents! Lack of situational awareness! What behavior is driving the current AI bubble and when might it burst?
Lately, on the BetaKit podcast, many leaders have been talking about AI: as a powerful new tool (like Cohere’s Nick Frost) or as a component of Canada’s sovereignty and prosperity (like AI Minister Evan Solomon). We even invited author Cory Doctorow to discuss what happens after the AI bubble bursts.
“They create AI that they sell as so powerful that it exceeds its limitations.”
But we never really discussed the bubble itself.
There are good reasons for this. We’re not economists, and the bubble is so big, growing so fast, and shaped so strangely that it seems difficult to grasp and contextualize for healthy debate and discussion. But this can no longer be ignored.
So we’re going to go deeper. Helping me identify and wave carefully selected red flags in the air is BetaKit Managing Editor Sarah Rieger.
Keeping the conversation about AI relevant and timely is no easy task. This episode was recorded before Hugging Face’s acquisition of Nvidia was confirmed, a whole bunch of (additional) OpenAI executives had left the company, and many (additional) agent-based AI cyberattacks had been revealed. This was likely recorded before Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Elon Musk released statements calling for a slowdown in AI development (though we may have discussed this when discussing the merits and likelihood of a controlled bursting of the AI bubble).

However, the core questions underlying our conversation remain surprisingly relevant. What is the current state of the AI bubble? How does this affect public markets? And how do public markets influence the AI bubble?
Let’s dig in.
