A young man accused of drug dealing in Cork City escaped custody while being escorted from Bridewell Police Station to Cork District Court on Anglesey Street.
However, the accused, 21-year-old Jamie O’Connell, was quickly re-arrested and appeared in court, where gardaí objected to bail in his case.
Detective Garda Michael Walsh said: “He escaped from custody after being put into a van leaving Bridewell. He set off on foot through the town center. He was apprehended in Paul Street.”
As he applied for bail, Jamie O’Connell said: “I’m not trying to avoid it, I just found myself in a bad predicament. My head was all over the place. I didn’t know where I was going or what I was doing.”
On the charge of possessing drugs with intent to sell or supply others, Jamie O’Connell said: “I’ll tell you the truth, most of the drugs I took.”
Judge David Waters refused bail and remanded the accused in custody until September 18.
In refusing bail, the judge said the main reason he made the decision was the State’s concern that he might reoffend if released on bail.
