Many Youth Congress workers on Saturday blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway here and burned tires to protest against the disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha.
Party workers led by Haryana Youth Congress chief Divyanshu Budhiraja approached the Kherki Daula toll plaza around 12:30 pm and raised slogans against the BJP government.
The Center revoked Rahul Gandhi’s membership to suppress the voice of the opposition. We will protest on the streets against the dictatorial decision of the BJP government, which is scared of the support received by the Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra,” Budhiraja said.
The Gurugram police reached the protest site and detained one of the protesters.
“Vikas Parmar alias Lala, a resident of Rohtak, was detained. He was later released,” a police officer said.
Based on a complaint by ASI Yogender Kumar, an FIR was registered against around 20 protesters under sections 147 (rioting), 283 (obstruction of public transport), 341 (wrongful detention) of the IPC at Kherki Daula police station.
A case was registered against those who blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway on Saturday. One of them has been arrested and action will be taken against the rest,” said Inspector Rajender Kumar, station house officer of Kherki Daula police station.
Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a Surat Gujarat court found him guilty in a defamation case in 2019. The disqualification will disqualify Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting polls for eight years unless a higher court overturns his conviction.
Meanwhile, former BJP MP Sudha Yadav accused the Gandhi scion of making baseless comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several occasions on both national and international platforms.
Rahul Ganbdhi’s behavior on this occasion simply demonstrates his arrogance. He has made baseless remarks against the Prime Minister at national and global forums,” she said at a press conference here.
In response to the allegations, Congress leader Captain Ajay Yadav said that
the saffron party’s preliminary plan and that the Union dispensation “cannot face the truth” as revealed by Gandhi.
