In the battle over whether the US or China will lead the world in artificial intelligence, the US side’s arguments can largely be summed up in four words: US good, China bad.
This worldview, supported by major American artificial intelligence companies, the Trump administration and many Republican members of Congress, portrays AI born and raised in China as a serious security threat. They claim that the Chinese government will use Chinese artificial intelligence models to steal information from businesses, individuals and government agencies. They also argue that since Chinese AI complies with Chinese censorship rules, American companies using these models will also be forced to comply with these rules.
Critics also say that if US AI overtakes Chinese AI, the US economy could suffer a devastating blow because hundreds of billions of dollars invested by US AI companies would go down the drain.
