GalaxEye Becomes First Startup to Receive US Patent for Satellite Imaging Technology


The US patent covers GalaxEye’s core invention of an architecture and system used to align and synchronize optical and microwave sensors for simultaneous, spatially and temporally consistent data collection. The same technology has already received a patent in India. The patent strengthens GalaxEye’s intellectual property position as the company prepares to expand its planned constellation of 30 satellites over the next five years, bolstered by growing commercial traffic among domestic and international customers. The network is expected to support defense, government and commercial applications in the areas of homeland security, agriculture, infrastructure, insurance, maritime intelligence and disaster management. “GalaxEye was recently awarded a US patent for its technology underlying OptoSAR, a prime example of the innovation emerging in India’s private space ecosystem… This is not only a significant technical innovation, but also has strong commercial potential in applications requiring richer and more actionable information,” said Somanath S. Panicker, former Chairman of Isro.

GalaxEye is creating the next generation of Earth observation capabilities with its patented OptoSAR imaging technology, which combines the strengths of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical imaging to provide reliable, all-weather, 24/7 reconnaissance.

GalaxEye technology is based on the fundamental challenge of Earth observation: optical and SAR sensors operate according to completely different physical principles and are traditionally deployed independently or combined through post-processing.

Even if optical and radar images of the same location are available, the two data sets may be acquired at different times, with different viewing geometries, and from different platforms. This creates time gaps and spatial drift, making it difficult to create a truly correlated view of the Earth. GalaxEye’s patented invention solves this problem at the system and sensor architecture level.

This provides the technological basis for the GalaxEye OptoSAR approach: combining visual and spectral information from optical imaging with all-weather, 24/7 SAR capabilities within a single Earth observation system.

The US patent builds on GalaxEye’s existing intellectual property position in India, where the company has already received a patent for the same underlying technology.

Securing protection in the United States is of strategic importance as GalaxEye develops technologies for the global Earth observation market. The company’s IP strategy aims to protect the fundamental architecture of multi-touch imaging. This patent now adds a critical layer of global intellectual property protection to the technology behind this achievement. For GalaxEye, the US patent represents a larger ambition: to create technologies in India that will become global benchmarks in Earth and space observation.

Bringing technologies from invention into orbit

The technology is closely related to GalaxEye’s flagship Drishti mission, through which the company brought its OptoSAR capabilities into space. On May 3, 2026, GalaxEye launched Mission Drishti, its first satellite and the world’s first OptoSAR imaging satellite. Drishti combines multispectral imaging and synthetic aperture radar on a single satellite platform, allowing for complementary optical and radar observations from the same spacecraft. At the time of launch, the spacecraft, weighing about 190 kg, was also India’s largest private Earth observation satellite. The Government of India has also recognized and supported this mission as the world’s first OptoSAR satellite and termed it as a major achievement in India’s space journey.
