March held to raise awareness about eye donation

Sankara Netralaya Eye Hospital on Tuesday organized ‘March for Sight 2026’ at Mount St. Thomas in Chennai to create awareness about eye donation while marking National Eye Donation Day.

The rally was graced by actor and philanthropist Gautami T. Former Chief Information Commissioner of Tamil Nadu and former Director General of Police CB-CID Shakeel Akhter was the chief guest.

Ms Gautami said eye donation could change lives and help create a safer environment for people with visual impairments. Mr Akhter said one cornea donation could help restore the sight of two people. He stressed the need to raise public awareness about eye donation and encourage people to donate their eyes.

T.S. Surendran, Chairman, and R.R. Sudhir, head of preventive ophthalmology department and deputy director of Cornea Services, took part in the rally along with Sankara Nethralaya staff, students and ophthalmologists.
