Reliance Industries Limited and British aerospace manufacturer Rolls-Royce have announced their intention to explore the possibility of developing an indigenous fighter engine for the AMCA program in India.
Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce will explore the feasibility of developing indigenous fighter engines for India’s AMCA program and will also explore the feasibility of an aerospace gas turbine package for the full engine life cycle.
This partnership could prove crucial in India’s bid to develop expertise in jet engine technology used for fighter jets and reduce dependence on external parties for this important defense technology.
On Friday, both firms said they plan to explore the possibility of setting up an aerospace gas turbine complex in India. This facility can integrate all aspects of engine design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, manufacturing and maintenance into one ecosystem.

However, it should be noted that this is just an exploratory step and the firms have not yet signed a joint venture or agreement.
Proposed aerospace gas turbine complex in India
Under the proposed plan, Reliance and Rolls-Royce will explore the possibility of creating a dedicated facility that could support the full development life cycle of advanced aircraft engines.
The proposed complex will potentially include:

- Maintenance and long-term support
- Development of future energy and propulsion technologies
The companies said the facility could eventually become a broader platform for advanced aerospace engines, rather than being limited to just one aircraft program.

What Reliance and Rolls-Royce will bring
The proposed partnership will be a collaboration between two firms in different industries.
Rolls Royce will be able to provide expertise in the development of aircraft engines, machinery and propellers.
On the other hand, Reliance Industries will offer its expertise in manufacturing, technology and project execution.
Thus, both parties are expected to benefit from the synergies of the collaboration.
Anant Ambani emphasizes strategic autonomy
Reliance Industries chief executive Anant Ambani said the proposed partnership reflects the importance of developing sovereign capabilities in strategically important technologies.
He said India’s strategic autonomy requires domestic capabilities in critical technologies and described the proposed collaboration as an attempt to combine Rolls-Royce’s engine expertise with Reliance’s manufacturing and execution capabilities.
Ambani said the long-term goal is to create an aircraft engine ecosystem that can become self-sufficient and eventually compete globally.
Rolls-Royce calls it a major milestone
Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic said the proposed initiative will combine the company’s decades of engineering expertise with Reliance’s capabilities in the Indian industrial sector.
He called the proposal an important step towards creating a stronger and more self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in India.
For Rolls-Royce, the proposed project could also expand its participation in India’s growing aerospace and defense sector.
Why is the AMCA mechanism so important?
Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is India’s planned fifth generation stealth fighter program.
The aircraft is being developed with advanced capabilities, including stealth capabilities, advanced sensors and electronic warfare systems. But one of the most difficult parts of designing a modern fighter is its propulsion system.
India has historically relied on foreign engine manufacturers for fighter jets. Therefore, the development of a powerful and reliable domestic combat engine remains a serious technological challenge.
