Artificial intelligence (AI) has crossed the threshold from experimentation to day-to-day operations in the Indian banking industry. Seven in 10 chief data officers (CDOs) report using AI “actively” at their banks, with 30 percent achieving scale adoption. However, adoption remains limited to low-complexity and auditable tasks such as customer support, fraud detection, document processing, and software quality assurance. When it comes to end-to-end workflows or critical decision making, deployments plummet. These findings are based on a 2026 survey conducted by banking technology firm Zeta, which interviewed 40 senior executives from 18 of India’s largest banks and non-banking financial companies.
