Seahawks QB Sam Darnold exits Patriots game early with hip injury

It wasn’t quite the start to the season the defending Super Bowl champions had hoped for.

Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold was forced to leave the field in the first quarter against the New England Patriots with a hip injury, the team announced.

He was listed as questionable to return and was replaced by backup QB Drew Lock.

Darnold appeared to be injured on the very first play of the game when he was sacked by Patriots cornerback Dre’Mont Jones.

He limped to the sideline and initially waved off the coaching staff. But Darnold eventually made his way to the medical tent and then returned to the locker room.

In his first season in Seattle last season, Darnold helped lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl LX victory over the Patriots.
