A clash broke out between two groups of youths during the immersion procession of Vinayaka idols at Karungalpalayam on Cauvery Road in Erode on Thursday (September 17, 2026) night.
The incident occurred around 10 pm when members of one group allegedly attacked members of another group during the procession. Videos allegedly showing the youths attacking each other later went viral on social media.
The incident caused panic among residents of the area, after which the police intervened. However, the young people who took part in the clash had already fled by that time.
Police sources said efforts are on to identify those seen in the video. The motive for the clash will be established once the person is identified and brought in for investigation, sources said. Police were also checking hospitals to see if anyone injured in the incident had been admitted to hospital for treatment.
More than 200 Vinayaka idols installed at different places in the city were taken out in a procession along highways and immersed in the Cauvery river.
