The future of the Impact Player rule remains uncertain ahead of IPL 2027 as the BCCI decided to defer a final decision after discussing the issue at the last meeting of the IPL Governing Council.
The rule, introduced in the IPL in 2023, allows each team to replace a player during a match with a designated substitute. It has since become an important tactical tool, allowing teams to bring in an additional specialist batter or bowler depending on the situation.
The BCCI is delaying a final decision on the IPL Impact Player rule introduced in 2023 as it seeks more input from stakeholders amid the franchise debate over its continuation.
However, its continuation remains a matter of debate. According to reports, a majority of IPL franchises have expressed opposition to keeping the rule. However, some teams argue that he should be retained for at least one more season because their roster decisions were made with the impact player clause in mind.
BCCI wants more feedback
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal said the board will consult with stakeholders before taking a final decision.
“The matter is under discussion,” Dhumal said, adding that feedback from stakeholders would be considered before a decision is made.
The Board of Governors is expected to return to the issue at its next meeting in about a month. Until then, the Impact Player provision remains under review rather than formally retained or repealed.
Why has this rule become the main topic of conversation?
The Impact Player system has changed the way teams build their playing roster. A side can effectively split their batting and bowling combinations by using the substitution option at the opportune point in the match.
This rule is also due to the change in tactical and scoring trends in the IPL. Cricket analysis has shown that the added ability to bat has affected how aggressively teams approach their deliveries.
Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill had earlier criticized the concept, arguing that an extra batter could reduce the importance of all-round skills and make the game more one-dimensional.
However, the BCCI has left the matter open for now. The next meeting of the Governing Council could decide whether the Impact Player becomes a permanent member of the IPL, continues for another season or is ultimately kicked out of the competition.
